This time I am not surprised that it has been so long since I posted. It seemed that being unable to walk was going to be the worst of my recovery. Actually each phase had its own challenges. It was pretty painful to start walking again without the boot. And do not even get me started on Physical Therapy. I am sort of half kidding about therapy. My therapists were great and I don't think that I would be walking as well as I am without them pushing me along. Yesterday was my last day of therapy. Now I have to keep up my exercises at home.

While I was stuck at home I worked on a couple of wool projects that were started and then just put away. One was about half stitched and still needed wool pennies made and sewn on. The other needed all the hand stitching done. The penny rug was not done the same as I have done before and I just didn't like how they were looking. I took them off and just stitched the back onto the wool. Not my favorite piece, but it is done. The second one I want to get framed.

Over the last few weeks I did a crochet along. I have not really done much crochet in years. Hardly any in fact. I wasn't sure that I could finish this blanket, but it was so bright and happy that I had to play along. I actually kept up and finished the final round of the edging this week. Gasp...
Pat Sloan is hosting her New Years luau again this year. (Virtual luau of course). The challenge this year, working on those pesky UFOs.. I worked on a quilt called Traffic Jam, it is a free pattern on Pat's site. The sashing was added and then the center of the top put together. I still have to calculate how many pieces I need to make the pieced borders.

I also pulled out the center of the sew along quilt that I started last year. Randy of Barrister's Block and Lori of Humble Quilts collaborated on this quilt and hosted the sew along. Instructions are still available on their blogs. (Check June 2013). I got the first pieced border sewn and put on. There is also a narrow plain border on it. I still have another pieced border, a narrow border, and an applique border to get done and onto the top. I plan to keep it moving.

This little cutie is a pattern that I did as a block of the month. It is Garden Baskets by Primitive Gatherings. I finished the applique blocks on schedule and have them sewn together. This one will have a pieced border too. What the heck? Are they UFOs because of the pieced borders?
Hoping to blog more often this year.
Happy Stitching,
Some of you may know that she and her BFF, Doug moved to LA three years ago. This year they started a screenplay. I went uh huh, like Mom's sometimes do. I am so proud of them. They have finished it. They have hired cast and crew to make the movie. They are really excited about making their movie.

Of course I am really excited that they work full time and stuck to a schedule to finish the screenplay. And they are really making a movie.

Check out this site to see them and hear what they are doing:
I am not sure why, I am really not busy so I have no excuse.

What is the ouch about in the title?

Four weeks ago I was taking some hangers down to the basement when I half missed a step. Just enough to twist my ankle and fall down the last two or three steps. I tried to get up but that was not happening. The hubby was outside so I crawled up the stairs and called out the door for him. I crawled up the next flight of stairs to the apartment. The hubby wanted to help me onto the couch. It was too much for me. I stayed on the floor. He wanted to head to the ER but I said wait a while. He went out to clean up what he was doing. I crawled to the bathtub thinking a little soak and I would feel better. NOT Poor hubby had to help me out of the tub and help me get dressed. Then we did head for the ER.

The ER DR came in and said he didn't think he would have to reduce the ankle (put the bones back in alignment) but he needed the xrays first. A few minutes went by and the nurse came in and announced that the Dr would need to reduce the fracture and she started getting everything ready. About 3 minutes later the DR came in and said no reduction. The ankle is fractured in three places and surgery would be needed. I am not sure which was worse news.

I was sent to the ortho unit with surgery to be done the next day. I said "on Sunday?" They said yes. The ER had put a soft cast on my ankle and that helped a bit. So did the medication they were shooting into me. Normally I am not a fan of strong pain meds but just then I was like "yes pain meds please".

Surgery went smoothly I am told. Plate and screws on one side of my ankle and screws only on the the other side. A new soft cast was on my foot and ice packs on top of that. On Monday I was released to go home. With instructions of no weight bearing for 6-8 weeks. And also no walker, crutches, wheelchair nothing. Just a referral to a lending closet in my area. On the way home we went and borrowed a walker from my dad. He doesn't use it.

I am healing but still non weight bearing. The apartment I live in is on the second story of a non elevator building. I can not leave the apartment on my own. My big activity of the day is bumping down the stairs on my bum then kneeling in the doorway to let the dog out. And then crawling back up the stairs. I do have a knee walker which is sooo much better than the walker so inside is better.

I can hardly wait to walk again. And drive. And not crawl.

I have done a little sewing, mostly just the BOM. I will show you the newest pics in another post.

Happy stitching.Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10091568315821485891noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493818493985391709.post-60185131978427671792014-07-29T18:58:00.000-05:002014-07-29T18:58:07.993-05:00Monday SewingI have been in a bit of a sewing funk lately. I did start leading a block of the month group this month. I made this top from Tula Pink's book "100 Modern Quilt Blocks"

and we are using the book to do this BOM.. I selected three colorways, one is Kaffe and Kona cottons, one is all neutrals, and the last is more pastel-ish. We are working on color, combining colors, and accuracy. This is geared more toward beginners, in fact last year when I discussed the idea during (last year's) BOM they were excited to try it. We will be doing 5 blocks a month for 6 months. At the first meeting they picked up their bundle of FQs and every month they pick two more FQs. I am available to assist them with picking colors if they would like help.

The first session I was explaining everything to them and one lady asked "an we pick any FQ in the store"? I said yes and she said "Oh NO". I replied oh no? and she said too many choices. LOL

Since I already finished one top, I am using another layout in the book to make another top. It is all neutrals and is called Skyline. I kind of gravitate toward lots of color so using only neutrals is a challenge for me.

These are the blocks we are doing this first month.
My DD wanted to take me somewhere that I would enjoy so we went to a sewing shop. It turns out the shop was only 3 miles from DD's apartment. The shop really specializes in garment sewing, but it was a good visit because DD has been wanting to learn to sew. We had a great time talking to the owner of the shop. Before we left my DD signed up for the beginner class where she will learn to use her machine and about the basic notions. She will also make a tote bag. She is really excited and I am too.

On another visit with DD we went to downtown LA. Our first stop, my DD's favorite shop...The last Bookstore. It is crazy in there. On the main floor it is like a regular, orderly book store. Upstairs is full of fun stuff. First of all there are no straight rows of books. All the bookcases are on angles to make a kind of maze through the books. There is an old vault with mysteries in it. There is an arch made out of books. And my favorite, the section where the books are arranged by color. It seriously looked like a fabric shop to me.
The arch

There is a small yarn shop up on the second floor too. And above the hall outside the shop is this amazing piece.

Along one side of the building there are small galleries with local artist's art on display. Lots of fun in one place.

We walked through the historic district. We wandered down to the fashion district too. As we headed back toward Angel flight, my DD asked if we could go to a vintage resale shop that she follows on instagram. She googled the address and we were really close so we went to look for it. We couldn't find the shop, but as we were looking DD saw the owner walking to the post office. We went back the way we had come and looked again. Still no luck. Just then, the shop owner passed us and I said we will follow her. We did. DD found a really cute dress and some black shorts.

After walking several blocks, and up a giant hill and back down it, we found out the Angel flight was closed. :( It is a trolley up a big hill with a park at the top. DD was so excited to show me the park that I walked up the million steps to see the park. Which was also closed. I needed oxygen.

Our last stop of the day was a foot massage in Chinatown. DD always wanted to go get a foot massage, but felt strange going alone. (This from the girl who packed her stuff and moved to LA. Without me.) Turns out they soak your feet while they massage your head and neck and arms. Then they do the feet and legs. Finally they have you lay face down and do some stretching on the back and arms. This lasts for an hour and costs $20.00. REALLY!!! It was awesome.

What a day.
The plan was really just a drive down Pacific Coast Highway (or PCH). As we got along Huntington Beach there was a lot of parking so we decided to park and take a walk.

We got out and started to look out at the beautiful water. It looked like we couldn't get down to the water from where we parked unless we took up rock climbing. (Have I mentioned that I am a klutz?) The sun was getting lower in the sky and we just kept walking and enjoying the view.

As we traveled down the path we saw that we could get down to the beach. Yeah. And it was a dog beach too, so we saw lots of dogs playing in the sand.

I had to put my toes in the sand.

I wanted to put my feet into the water so I went closer. One wave came and washed over my feet. It felt so good. Another wave came and washed over my feet. Then my sister called my name and I turned around for a second, looking back at the ocean in time to see a bigger wave coming. I managed to move a bit, but I still got wet up to my thighs. In jean shorts. That does not feel good like waves on your feet let me tell you. My sister laughed and got my picture, which is still on her phone.
Now it was her turn to get her feet wet. Ha ha ha she got hit by a big wave too. She had on Capris. Now we were wet, and it was cool by the water so we started back toward the car.

That is when we saw this sign:

Between being wet, and that silly sign we laughed all the way back to the car.

Happy stitching
I went west for a visit. I have been back a week and I am barely getting myself functional again. Maybe the reason I stay home a lot. :)

My DD took me to Griffin Observatory (That might not be the exact name ). We went up a twisty road to the top of a mountain. Scared me. You gotta remember that I am a flat lander. I live in Illinois, and we don't have hills let alone mountains.

Inside the observatory there was a really cool instillation of 'space' jewelry. In one long hall there were so many pieces of jewelry that were stars, moons, and sun shapes. It was so cool, but too dark to get a good picture.

There were also many different views of L.A. all around the observatory. Complete with smog layer.

Outside of the observatory the different orbits of the planets were identified by a small plaque and a circle etched into the concrete. I had to take the picture of the one for Pluto. Is Pluto a planet again? I think it is. In any case Pluto was identified by Clyde Tombaugh, a distant cousin of mine. We never met but Pluto became my favorite planet (after earth of course) when I learned about Clyde.
Even though I wasn't sure how it all worked, I jumped in. There are so many wonderful quilters on that forum and we talk about most everything. When I went to Market I was lucky enough to meet Pat (and Gregg) and get to chat with them a bit. Last fall Pat came to the guild I belong to and I took both of her workshops. (Great time BTW) She has so much energy and is always coming up with projects and sew- alongs for us to do. There are also free patterns available. This year she designed a Mystery block of the month, that she calls Globetrotting.
How could I not join in?
The first block: Washington D.C.
Last year we started working on a pattern as a block of the month project. It is from the book "New Ideas for Applique. I need just a bit more fabric to do the borders. The applique for the borders is traced and ready to fuse to fabric.
Pat is also hosting the free Aurifil Block of the month this year. Come back and I will show you those blocks.
Happy stitching
I resisted. I have so many books and so many projects waiting to be made that I just could not get started on anything else. Some time went by and I saw a sew along was starting using the book. I held firm, for about a day. I thought I would get a pile of solids and sew along. I bought solids and the book. Then I pulled out my Kaffe stash and I liked it all together.
Three blocks a week were posted and I started out a few weeks behind. I made a plan to do 6 blocks a week until I got caught up. I did the current weeks blocks and then the first weeks blocks. Eventually I caught up and stayed caught up. Once the blocks were done I had to find sashing and borders. I didn't want to use white. I looked and looked and nothing spoke to me. I finally decided that I was just going to pick something that worked, even if I had to do white. (There is nothing wrong with white, it is just always my go to and I am trying to breakout and be more daring. Sometimes I like it sometimes I am not sure.) The fabric I picked is a white background with black and gray tiny circles on it.

I put the top together and I like it. I hope I do not dither as much about a backing.
I am also at the end of the Beginners BOM that I have been running at the shop. You remember this picture. We had to delay the start of the program because there were so few sign ups. :( I made the first row and more people signed up when they saw the colors. They have been a fun group to work with. I will never have an award winning quilt, but it is really so much fun to share what I do know. I must say that the applique was not well received by all. I did have several design ideas to replace the applique for those that chose not to try it. . It is fused and either hand stitched or machine stitched.
I over heard one of them tell the boss that she would never try a pattern that had HSTs in it and then she said " And now I know how to do them. I can do all those patterns now". I was stupid happy.

I did finish the dresses for Haiti. When my friend posted a picture with her daughter and one of the little girls I was happy to see one of the dresses being worn.
Sorry about the pictures, there isn't really good light anywhere in the apartment. Maybe when it warns up I can get the hubby to go outside and hold quilts for me.
And I never seem to actually catch up. Do you? As usual with the beginning of a new year, I made plans to work on that UFO list that never ends. Following the tips from Pat Sloan I actually donated fabric, broke up fabric I put together to make specific quilts, and (gasp) tossed a couple of tops that I just did not want to spend anymore time on. I also attempted to be more realistic with my planning. Projects never go as fast as I think they will. (shocking right?) Of course getting a pile of quilts back from the shop (unquilted) did not help.

Last year I taught a class on string quilts. I showed them the basics and my sample was just the strings put together (cause I was making lots of samples). I got my strings back and I bought some border fabrics to get it finished. I finally pulled it out of the closet and got the top finished. I thought I liked the colors I picked for the borders, but I am not really sure. BUT it stays and I will it finished.
Here is the strings quilt top:

My youngest daughter, saw a quilt she loved in the book "City Quilts". I picked out the fabric a while ago and put them neatly in a bin. :) Once they were suitable aged I pulled them out to start that quilt.
the first little pieces ready to start putting together looked like this

Some of the little pieces became bigger units

and then even bigger units. I had the last 12 rows together and was clipping threads when I clipped a hole in the sashing. So I had to unpick and unpick some more. I cut out the hole and pieced it back together.

The quilt still needs a small gray border but I need to get more gray from the shop.

Poor quilts look so lumpy on the bed, guess I shouldn't pile them on top of each other to get pictures.

I feel like I am getting some things done, but the pace is way slower than I would like.
Happy stitching.

Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10091568315821485891noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493818493985391709.post-6648773706917855222014-01-27T12:32:00.000-06:002014-01-27T12:32:39.907-06:00Works in ProgressYou might remember seeing some of the Bunny Hill blocks that I did a while back. I printed the pattern off when it was offered as a free Block of the Month from Ann at Bunny Hill. While I was spending time on Pat Sloan's quilt forum, I learned that a bunch of us had this quilt on our want to do list.
We decided to do it as a sort of a block of the month project. We were going to do 2 blocks a month and get this cute quilt done. I kept up with my blocks.

Of course, as it often happens, once the blocks were done they just stayed in the project box waiting to be finished. On the day that I bought sashing and border fabrics I must have been very creative. I usually tend to be a bit 'safe' when choosing fabrics. Every now and then I really just go crazy.

I have the top together now. Here it is in all of it's wildness. I am not sure how I feel about it, but I do think it is anything but 'safe'. I even got some fabric today for the backing. So I have no excuse for not getting this done, done ,done.

I have also been working on a Block of the Month that I have been running at the shop. You saw the first couple of blocks. Here is a favorite block.

The hubby held it up for me once I got all the blocks together.

I now have two of the three borders on it. I am hoping to get the remaining border on tomorrow and layer it for quilting. I am following McKenna Ryan's instructions for quilting, which is quilting and securing the edges of the applique in one. After that I can finally put on all the really cute embellishments. I will show it once it is all done.

Happy stitching
Sooo many ideas and sooo little time. Of course I don't limit myself to just quilt related items. I have also been trying to get my sister to get set up and check out Pinterest. Near the end of November my sister and my older daughter were over visiting me and I pulled up Pinterest and handed the laptop to my sister. I heard "Oh that is cute" many times. One of the things she liked hit me as a good project for me to make for her. The project : a small battery operated clock with colorful mice surrounding it. Of course the original link was gone so no instructions for knitting the mice. I went to Ravelry and looked for tiny mice and I found a pattern
The mice were actually supposed to be knit in the round, but I did not have size 1 double points so I decided to just use straight needles and sew up the mouse once I had it knitted. So I bought some DK weight yarn and got busy.

Once the body is knit, stuff with fiberfill. I found out the hard way that the mice look better a bit overstuffed.
Then of course each mouse needed two ears knit. Little, tiny ears. And a tail that is just a crochet chain.
I will not even tell you what my sister said to me when she saw it on Christmas eve, but the word nuts figured in there. ;) In case you are worried, this was not her 'main' gift.

I will be have some quilty pics to show you very soon.
Happy stitching
On New Year's Eve day I got the cold/flu that I had been fighting. Like BAM. I am finally starting to feel better. Of course I had big plans to get back to UFO busting and really finish some of those quilts. Might have to rework that schedule a bit. LOL

Just a quick catch up. After having foot pain for weeks after the quilt show in September, I went to the foot Dr. and found I had a stress fracture. I was in a post op shoe for 5 weeks and that wasn't doing the job, so I got a lovely boot. I wore that for 3 weeks before I got my foot liberated. It seemed like forever.

During this same time, DH left for Portland, Or to help take care of his mother. He was there for 2 months. While he was there both of our girls flew to Portland to see Grandma too. He came home the first Saturday in December and his Mom passed away December the 10th. I know he was glad that he had spent so much time with her.

Last January I started knitting for my co workers for Christmas. I made cowls and scarves for them. It felt good to have that much done since I spent so much time off the fractured foot. Shopping just wasn't on the approved list of activities. (Of course DH was gone so I couldn't even enlist his help.) These a few of the cowls that were gifted.

I am once again joining in on Pat Sloan's UFO busting challenge for the year, so hopefully I can get a bunch of those tops quilted and done. Then of course there are the other UFOs, like unfinished BOMs. Why am I such a sucker for a BOM? They always seem so innocent. Just one block or two a month. Easy right? Only if you don't end up doing a half dozen or so. I am still trying to resist some new ones that are starting up.

Stay tuned and see how many I end up working on. And if I make progress finishing those pesky UFOs.

Happy stitching.Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10091568315821485891noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493818493985391709.post-32190522946633385272013-10-29T12:27:00.001-05:002013-10-29T12:27:41.614-05:00A little sewingI have been just so bad about blogging. It seems like I am not getting much done so there is not much to blog about. I have been working on a few things so I will share those things with you.
Pat Sloan started a few projects rather close together and of course I wanted to do them all.
The one that has actually gotten worked on is a year in applique from Pat's book New Ideas for Applique . You know how I love a Block of the Month. The two most recent blocks:
Once in a blue moon

There is still a ways to go, we did not start at the beginning of the year. I am also working on her pattern "Traffic Jam" which was a free pattern Pat had in her newsletter. That I am working on as a leader and ender. Hopefully soon I will have something to show on that project.

I as still working on the McKenna Ryan BOM at the shop. Here is the third block. I still need to get pictures of the next two. I am working on the last block then it will be time to get it all together.

We had gotten a book by Tula Pink in the shop 100 blocks and I wanted it, but I resisted. Then I found a sew along in the blogs and I caved in. I bought the book, raided my stash, and went shopping for more fabric. (And more and more, but I digress) True to form, I did not start right away. Wow does a week fly by fast. Before I knew what happened I was weeks behind. I made a plan. I worked on the current week's blocks and blocks from the beginning. In a few weeks I caught up. I won't show you all those photos but I will share a couple.

I bought a piece of pink foam insulation when I was doing my layout for the quilt show and I plan to wrap it in either batting or flannel and nail it to the wall for a design wall. Any thoughts on what to use? Hopefully soon I can put up the Tula blocks and see how it is looking.

I am also cutting DD's quilt that has been on the to do list way too long. I really must get a handle on those pesky UFOs.

Later and happy stitching

Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10091568315821485891noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493818493985391709.post-22456606106787889442013-09-29T09:37:00.002-05:002013-09-29T09:37:52.506-05:00A few of my favorite quiltsI arrived at the show very early on Friday just to make sure everything was ready to go at the mini auction. It was. So I wandered around and looked at all the quilts. It is so sew inspiring to see the quilts that everyone makes. Some simple, some stunning, all beautiful!!
Some of my friend's quilts:
Marcia and I did this Block of the month last year. Hers is done, mine is in pieces. (Jo Morton pattern)

She also entered Raining Cats and Dogs by Bunny Hill. I did the embroidery, she did the rest

Jeannie did this beauty as a Block of the Month (through the mail) But she took it up a few notches

Look at that beading.

She also designed, stitched, and quilted this one.

Carol had a favorite of mine in the show, pattern was in APQ I think.

She also did these cute dresses.

I did have mini quilts in the auction. Does that count? Hu?

Happy stitching

Can't get the last picture to post, so no dresses this time.
It is really fun to watch the show come together, even more fun if you are not the one putting it together ;). My committee of one, me, was the Mini quilt Silent Auction. Thursday was set up day and Friday was opening day. On Thursday I hung 95 minis, with some wonderful volunteers. Then I went home to nap because I knew Friday would be a long day.
Here are the minis for auction

The show closed at 8 pm Friday night. The bidding on the minis closed at 7pm. We start a count down about a half an hour before which usually results in a mob of bidders returning to the table to bid one more time. Once the bidding closes we circle the last bidder and the amount. Then the crown surges forward to find all the bids they won. They take them to the cashier and then the cashier hands them off to one of the volunteers to pull the mini(s) off the board. The rest are taken down, pinned to the bid sheet and set aside. Then we hung 100 more mini quilts for Saturday's auction. Then Saturday we do it all over again.

I am now following up on all the minis that were won by people who were not at the show when the bids closed. Not my favorite part. But I can contact people in my jammies, and I did.

Will show you some quilts next post!
Happy stitchingBethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10091568315821485891noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493818493985391709.post-61499271148355063342013-09-24T18:20:00.000-05:002013-09-24T18:20:31.203-05:00Book ReviewBethany House publishers sent me a book to read. My part of the deal is that I review it on my blog. I chose "Rules of Murder" by Julianna Deering.
Let me first say that I am a life long fan of mystery series, Cherry Ames, Nancy Drew, Bobbsey Twins, to name a few. I grew older read more 'adult' mysteries. Can't get enough of them.

The back cover of this book says: "Introducing Drew Farthering. From the tip of his black homburg to the crease in his Cheviot trousers, he's the epitome of a stylish 1930s English gentleman. His only problem? The body he just discovered."

I found Drew and his best friend, Nick likable, but maybe not really believable. That being said it didn't really bother me. I enjoyed the contrast of the English gentlemen and the American girls. The plot wasn't difficult to follow, but there were enough twists and turns to keep it interesting.Strange characters pop in and make you wonder hmmm? A bit of romance, some danger, and of course murder to solve. Enjoyable reading.

I plan to look for more by this author.Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10091568315821485891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493818493985391709.post-26147704864064372912013-09-07T08:59:00.001-05:002013-09-07T08:59:34.345-05:00It doesn't seem possible that it has been so long since I posted anything. I am apparently getting old since I have been struggling with arthritis all summer. All year actually, but worse than usual this summer. Enough kvetching...;)

I promised that I would be doing a post about some great bags. I am a bit late for what I had planned to do, but the bags are still great. While reading blogs I followed a link to Sew Sweetness.com and was just amazed. (I can't remember how to link) There are free bag patterns that are just so cool you want to make them right away. Then Sara started designing more bags that are available by PDF. Lots of great pictures and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. She has lots of bag testers and she shows all of their bags when she introduces a new pattern.

Not long after that I had the chance to meet Sara at Quilt Market in Houston. (And yes she is totally sweet). During that same time period we were expanding the shop to 3 times its original size. And by we I mean that I was there. Not actually doing any 'expanding'. The boss developed a plan to have a year of events to celebrate the expansion.

We had Karen Coombs do a trunk show and she taught a class the following day. She was great! Everyone loved the workshop. Our regional rep from Northcott came and brought a bunch of their quilt samples from market. Another great event ( I missed that one). We had a Moda rep talking about all that wonderful Moda fabric. Victoria Findley Wolf did a trunk show and a workshop the following day. She was a huge hit with everyone. So creative, and funny, and friendly.

In the middle of all this planning I asked Sara if she would do her interfacing lecture from Sewing Summit and then teach a bag class the next day. She said yes. I got to see her again when she came to discuss the details and bring some bags to pick a pattern from. We selected this bag..The Petrillo Bag. It has a cool separate pocket inside for your E-reader or Ipad. Still lots of room for 'purse stuff'.
I missed her lecture, but got to be around for the workshop. (I was working so I did not get to take it).
Really great news from Sara is that she has started to print some of her patterns and they were picked up almost immediately by United Notion Distributors. And she has book coming out in November with all new patterns in it.
In August I resigned from the shop. Since the expansion it is really busy and the pace is too much for me. My last day was August 31st. I will still be doing the Beginning Block of the Month that is in progress. I will also be finishing the McKenna Ryan pattern 'Heaven and Nature Sings' that is also being done as a block of the month. I will catch you up on those next post.

There is still going to be an event at the shop in October that I will attend. I got the idea from a schoolhouse presentation and my friends at the shop made projects for the event. Now we wait until after some big vending the shop is doing in September and then we have a little fun.

More to come. ;)
It flew by in a nanosecond. OK maybe not that fast. No sewing happened at all either. My younger DD flew in from LA on Tuesday night. She came in to be a bridesmaid in her friend's wedding on Friday night.
We spent hours at a salon on Wed. getting DD's hair done. She has dark hair, but keeps it a very white blond color currently. When she called to schedule the appointment they said, oh no problem. We went there because our cousin works there and is a great colorist, but she was off that day and nothing else worked with the events surrounding the wedding. As we left it was sort of getting overcast. We went dress shopping for a dress for the rehearsal dinner. Later my other DD came over to practice doing wedding make-up.
Thursday we woke up late and hung out and chatted until it was time for her to get ready for the rehearsal. After washing her hair she had what she described as a level 3 melt down. We had noticed that in places her roots looked a bit gold. Well.... it wasn't just in places. And gold roots and white hair is not a pretty look. She wore her adorable new dress and shoes. She wore a scarf around her head that covered the offending roots up front. While she was out I called my cousin and told her about the hair drama. She told me what kind of toner to get and what to do. Gulp. (Considering I have lots of pictures of me sporting very brassy blond hair I was scared).
Friday morning I shook DD out of bed early and we went to the beauty supply store for supplies. The nicest guy was working and he made sure we had everything we needed. (Except experience).
Back home I mixed the stuff and snapped on some gloves and got to work. I made her go shampoo a bit too soon so the roots were toned down but still a bit goldish. I reapplied and left the room. We waited the longest possible time and she showered and washed her hair again. It came out blond. The roots a bit darker than the rest of her hair but at least the same color. Crisis averted.
DD after the ceremony writing well wishes to the happy couple. Then taping her congratulations.
Just a little bit about the town we stayed in, Elizabethtown, KY. The biggest name to hail from there is Abraham Lincoln. Thomas Lincoln, Abraham's father was a skilled carpenter and furniture maker. In 1809 the Thomas Lincoln family was living on the Sinking Spring farm. There they welcomed Abraham, named after his grandfather, on Feb. 12. Eventually the Lincoln family settled in Cole's County, Illinois. The home that Thomas built:
I feel like I came home knowing a bit more history than when I left. A great trip even though I didn't quilt. LOL
Happy stitchingBethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10091568315821485891noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493818493985391709.post-30807079921225725962013-05-16T08:51:00.001-05:002013-05-16T08:51:18.783-05:00A quick trip Part 1The first Friday in May I packed up my car and hit the road. I met my BFF from high school at the half way point between our two homes. She lives in North Carolina. Our Dad's were career Navy. We met on the first day of high school. We got our first jobs at the same place. We had our first serious boyfriends at the same time (and they were friends). Lots of history between us. But I digress... we met in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. On derby week end. It rained on me all the way through Indiana with is most of the trip. I hit Kentucky and the sun came out. It warmed up. By the time we met at the hotel it was beautiful out. We had lots of plans for the week end.
Saturday morning dawned or rather did not dawn, but stayed cold, dark, and rainy. We went for a walk at the mall. Then we went to a quilt shop. We stopped into the tourism office to find something to do indoors. The lady there recommended a small town with lots of cute shops and antique stores. We grabbed umbrellas and headed out. It was a cute town. I saw lots of quilts. (Will post those later).

Sunday we awoke to more of the same, but not raining as hard. Luckily I brought my laptop so I grabbed a map and started looking for more indoor stuff to do. We headed for Bardstown. We walked around the square and the town and stopped for lunch at the Old Talbott Tavern. The original part of the building was built in 1779 and is known as the oldest western stagecoach stop in America. We ate in the original building. It was so cool. Some pics of downtown.
Then we went museum hopping. We went to a Civil War Museum, The War Memorial of Mid-America, and Women of the Civil War Museum. Gives such a life to all that history studied in classes. Our last stop was Old Bardstown Village, a reproduction of a 1790 frontier community. Most of the buildings are original, some over 150 years old. Of course they were moved to the current location. I sure would not want to spend a winter in those tiny buildings.
Monday we still hoped for good weather, but it was not to be. I hit the map and the laptop again and found Pleasant Hill which was a Shaker community in the 1800s and early 1900s. . We got our tickets and started off to see the village. In most of the buildings there were people in Shaker dress to give some history, and answer questions. It was fascinating. I really did not know much about the Shakers beyond the furniture. This Shaker community was mainly agricultural. They farmed, raised chickens, pigs, goats, sheep, and cattle. We saw a sheep being sheared. later we saw the washed fleece, saw it carded and spun, and then dyed. Being a knitter I was of course excited to see the process.
In addition to the yarn, they still produce woven fabric, shaker brooms, and shaker wooden boxes. Of course Shakers no longer live there, but all of the 'manufacturing' is still done with the original tools and methods used by the community so long ago. It was just an amazing experience to learn about their way of life.
Tuesday dawned bright and sunny. Of course it did, we were leaving Kentucky. ;) We did manage to do the driving tour of historic buildings in Elizabethtown before we hit the road headed for home. Sad to part, but happy to have had the time together.
Happy stitching everyone!Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10091568315821485891noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493818493985391709.post-86024987526593257132013-05-10T10:37:00.001-05:002013-05-10T10:37:18.668-05:00Starting to sewThe end of April I finally started to sew again. Not a lot, but at least I feel like I might be able to be a quilter again.
I have been spending time online looking at quilting sites and seeking inspiration. While doing that and playing on blogs Craftsy was having a sale. I went there and looked around. I signed up for some classes. I signed up for the 2012 Block of the month and the 2013 Block of the month. I decided to just do the 2012 one this year. And I am not trying to 'catch up'. I just started with the first blocks and will try to do the two blocks every month. Here are the first two
I spend a lot of time on Pat Sloan's online forum too. There are so many wonderful quilters there. So much inspiration and encouragement. Anyway, Pat is doing some sew alongs and I am doing one from her newest books. Here is my first block. I still need to stitch it down. Not sure if I want to do it by hand or by machine.
It is time at the shop to start new classes and programs. I had planned to have a new Block of the Month for beginners started by April. That was before the move of course. Now it will kick off in June. I have the blocks cut and ready to go. I also started a McKenna Ryan quilt that will be a Block of the Month for 6 months. It is a Christmas pattern called Heaven and Earth. This will be the first block presented.
I have more to tell you. A short trip. More quilty stuff. Some very cool bags.Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10091568315821485891noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493818493985391709.post-89520334184809298262013-04-07T12:39:00.001-05:002013-04-07T12:39:47.237-05:00In the middle picsThe actual physical part of the move went smoothly. The movers arrived on time and started to work. The way they pack the truck is totally amazing. Just over 2 hours later and the house was nearly empty. Another 2 hours at the apartment and the truck was empty. I must say they were no where near as good at putting things into storage in the basement.

Since the apartment was not really ready for prime time, we decided before the move that we would go back and sleep at the house. We left a TV and a chair. We had the air mattresses in the rented storage space. The DH was too tired to go get the air mattresses, said he would sleep on the carpet upstairs. I got us some food (Subway) and myself a camp chair. Just like camping, but without weather. The next day we started living at the apartment.

I will not bore you with all the details of living in a tiny space during reno, and painting. I just tried to put away what I could. I unloaded the whole basement storage and redid it so everything fit in it. The DH is still amazed. LOL

Things are not completely done yet, but I thought you might like an update. The Living room is mostly done, I have curtain rods going up tomorrow and a replacement for that cracked window has been ordered.

The kitchen has new stove and fridge. It has the "shells" of cabinets. I used two of the shelves from the linen closet to make a counter top for the microwave. I can not wait to get a sink.

The bathroom is done, except for a vanity light and a back splash for the sink.

I am still changing the sewing room around trying to find a comfortable work set up. I think I might have found it.

Yesterday I went to the rented storage space and got a bunch of yarn, knitting books, and quilting books. There is still a ton more there, but there is still a little room here so I can bring some more home. It made me stupid happy to put that stuff in my room.

I will be back at work this week, and I hope my friends can help me find my mojo. It has been gone a long time this time.
Thanks to all my blogging friends for your support and encouragement.

Happy stitching.Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10091568315821485891noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493818493985391709.post-13840790126223215112013-03-21T11:14:00.001-05:002013-03-21T11:14:27.555-05:00Before picsHi everyone. Still packing here. I am now well known at the local Goodwill drop off center. I have used up so many trash bags. I even have those huge Construction grade bags as well. The storage space is filling up.

I thought I would share some pics I snapped at the apartment this week. Our "guys" are hard at work in the apartment. So far the whole place looks worse. LOL. They had just finished sanding the hardwood floors in the living room and hallway.

The kitchen is sort of command central. Yes that is the toilet in the kitchen. No that is not where it belongs.
